.. socially awkward ..

I was at the store last week picking up some food and flowers, when out of the corner of my eye I spotted an acquaintance of mine. Mind you, it was just out of the corner of my eye, so I didn't get a good look at her, but she was standing right behind me in line. Instead of looking back to see if it was who I thought it was, I just redirected my eyes to my purse pretending to look for something, and tried to be as inconspicuous as possible. Since I had avoided her to begin with, I felt the need to keep up the whole act. So, I almost ran to my car after I finished paying. I was hyper-aware for the rest of the time I was there, too. Just ridiculous!

It's not even like I don't like her, I do! On the few occasions that we've met, it's always been a good time. So, it would have been perfectly pleasant to turn around and say hi. It must be a touch of social anxiety, too, because how awkward would it have been if she didn't recognize me.

Oh my, and this wasn't the first time I avoided someone that I happened to spot in public. I just don't like to be surprised in public, I guess. Although, if it's a good friend, it's totally different. I'd love to see that person! Just today, I happened upon a friend at the mall. That was nice, although we only briefly talked before I had to skedaddle.

You know how it is though. Sometimes, you've dragged your ass out of the house, hair unkempt, wearing sweats, and truthfully, you're just not in a presentable condition. Plus, all the awkward small talk and if it's someone you really don't know, then you're not exactly sure if it really is that person. So much trouble!

Guess I should just stay home then.
